International Women’s Day is a global celebration of women’s achievements in social, economic, cultural and political. Quoted from the organizers of the celebration, "Through purposeful collaboration, we can help women advance and unleash the limitless potential offered to economies the world over.” It is a day celebrated in many countries globally and it marks as a call to action to achieve full gender equality for women in “a man’s world.”

5 Reasons Why We Need To Continue To  Celebrate International Women’s Day

The Stereotypes

A stereotype that has been holding women back for the past centuries now and till this very day, the world still lack the opportunity to play a huge role in our society. For example, female CEOs or politicians. This stereotype includes the idea that women should all be a girly girl dressed in pink, that we should be sexy nurses but not doctors and we should do yoga instead of boxing.  Women should have the rights to choose what they would want to do, be, go, marry or love and this is one of the main reasons why we should continue fighting for equality for women for the world to continue to move forward and grow with time.

Women’s Education

A lot of studies has shown that the number of educated women is much lower than educated men globally. It may come as a surprise to you that in the current days, there are still parents who only push their sons to be highly educated (to make the family proud) and chose to neglect their daughter’s ambitions in making them proud of her achievements equally.

Gender Pay Gap

As times have changed for most places, there is still a big gap between female and male employees in the working world. Studies from the World Economic Forums have claimed that the gender gap, unfortunately, we nor our children will be able to see through the day when it finally arrives. It was estimated that it would most likely to be achieved at the end of the next century.

Violence Against Women Is Not Acceptable

At one point in time, it seems like violence against women were a common problem and have populated the headlines and global news. After the numerous arguments against Harvey Weinstein and other well-known men in power, the#MeToo movement finally managed to give women a voice and the safety to speak on the abuse and harassment they have continuously suffer in film, fashion, music, politics and art. No, violence itself is not acceptable; for women or men and with gender equality, it will take away the rights of men or people to disrespectfully abuse women mentally or physically and women will finally be treated respectfully as to how they should have been treated all these while.

Victim Blaming Still Exists

Although we do not hear it every day, when it comes to the numbers of rape cases, believe us when we say, it is still happening till this current day. Rape occurs every single day worldwide and it is not okay. It is even worst when the victim always ended up forced to take all the blame at the end of the day. Whether women are in a tube top or hot pants, it does not give men the rights to label women indecent just because they are wearing something commonly labelled to be “too revealing” for the society.  Women go through hormonal changes daily and should be allowed to dress as they please while men should learn a thing or two about controlling their hormones when they see an attractive woman. Men should be educated to keep it in his pants and to decide on their choices properly. We should no longer be accepting excuses from men such as “she was asking for it!” or “she was seducing me.” As much as women do their best to continue to be kind and considerate, men should do the same equally. It must be known that women dress up to feel good and confident about themselves and not to please men.

It’s time to make a change and it begins with our society today. We should stop putting down women because they are equally capable as men and with this, we can achieve gender equality together.
